Your device could be a notebook, a laptop, or any device which is portable (can be easily moved) and has decent processing power.

Buying a controller that suits you is important. The Controller should ALWAYS be Economical because cheap is what we're going for, right?😉
You should keep track of these things while buying a controller-
For a cheap controller, I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.in/Quantum-QHM7468-2V-Game-Controller-Black/dp/B06XP87WD7 (search for the same model elsewhere, prices keep fluctuating. I got it for somewhere around INR 250 offline)
Now, If you buy an expensive controller, then you'd get a driver CD which will get installed and your games will recognize the controller, and you'll start playing... BOOM! Your quest ends here.
But who buys expensive stuff when you can get the same experience for cheaper?
Now that you have the controller, you will have to download a sweet little shareware software called JoyToKey.

Now you need to install it. if you are worried about the software's credibility, here's a VirusTotal Report:
Follow On-Screen Instructions To Install.
Now, On opening JoyToKey, You will be greeted with a window like this:
It will detect your gamepad upon connecting, and pressing any button would highlight the corresponding option on the screen.
By using the 'Edit Button Assignment' button, you can specify WHAT KEYBOARD KEY should be pressed upon pressing of a specific button on the gamepad.
Edit the button assignment as you would like.
If you would like to play games like Asphalt 8 on your gamepad, here is a .cfg file:
Extract the file and copy both .cfg files into the JoyToKey_en Folder.
Get A TV and plug your device to it through an HDMI Cable/Cast.
Connect Your Controller
Start Up Your Game.
